How many people do you know that say they have a poor memory? Or claim not to be able to remember things very well?

In today’s society we are busier than we have ever been and more and more pressure is placed on so many people do things that in many cases are a stretch, so is it any wonder people can become lost in their thoughts? So the question is – is it a poor memory that people have or are they just cluttered in their thoughts with too much happening?

I have used this exercise with hundreds of people and seen the same result each and everytime, people sit with their mouths open astounded how their memory can easily recall 10 totally random items after hearing them once in a conversation.

Imagine being in a verbal conversation and you were asked to remember the following random items in order – a ball, a hotdog, a lamp, a garden gate, a pen, a spoon, a shoelace, a car stereo, a lolly stick and a small green plant and you had 60 seconds to remember them – could you do it? In many cases people get about 3 out of ten but not in any particular order, but after adding this simple exercise, your memory can boost to remember all ten easily.

Try this;

I would like you to imagine these pictures that rhyme with the numbers 1 – 10, the numbers following are known as the “hook numbers” if the exercise is to work it is essential that you remember the hook images to the numbers. When you think of the number 1 you immediately imagine a bun, 2 imagine a shoe, as follows…

1 = Bun (eating)
2 = Shoe
3 = Tree
4 = Door
5 = Hive (bees)
6 = Sticks (tied together)
7 = Heaven
8 = Gate (creaky)
9 = Vine (grapes)
10 = Hen

And now associate each of the first 10 random items with the images attached to the hook number images, as follows

The first one of the 10 items was “ball” so now imagine a person trying to eat a bun (1 hook number) but they cant because there is ball inside the bun and their teeth keep bouncing off

The second item was a hotdog, so now associate this with the 2nd hook number image which is “shoe” , so now imagine somebody putting their shoe on and there is a hotdog inside their shoe

The third one is a lamp, so associate this with the 3rd hook number image “tree” so imagine, instead of leaves the tree has lots of little lamps dangling from each branch

And so on…..

The trick to this is to make the association to the “hook” images as silly as possible, the sillier or out of context they are the easier they are to remember.
